Fueling the Road Ahead: A Conversation with RaceTrac CEO Natalie Morhous

At our latest Meaningful Conversations event, RaceTrac CEO Natalie Morhous shared candid insights on what it takes to lead through volatility, stay grounded in values and build a brand people trust — every single day. From navigating the uncertainty of the fuel business to thinking ahead about electric vehicles and the future of retail, her perspective offered a practical reminder that strong leadership is as much about consistency and care as it is about vision.

Here are a few meaningful insights on leadership that stood out in the conversation with Natalie:

Make failure your friend, not a roadblock.

One of the consistent themes from the conversation was that businesses can’t grow without taking risks — but those risks need to be calculated. Morhous shared her father’s advice (Carl Bolch, Jr.) to “make failure your friend,” a reminder that mistakes are part of progress as long as teams learn from them and don’t repeat them. In a volatile industry, that mindset helps create resilience.

Build around experts, not ego.

Morhous emphasized that a CEO doesn’t need to be involved in every part of the business to lead successfully. Instead, she underscored the value of surrounding yourself with knowledgeable people you trust and providing them ample room to do their jobs. She also noted that the C-suite needs to function as a team, working together instead of operating in silos. Ultimately, the strength of a leader is reflected in the strength and alignment of the team around them.

Rethink What Mentorship Really Means.

Mentorship is often framed as a coffee chat or a quick exchange of advice — but for Natalie, it’s much more than that. Being a mentor is about using your own experiences to help others grow and develop their own way of thinking.

This perspective reinforces a broader leadership mindset: mentorship isn’t about giving answers — it’s about equipping others to find their own.

Lead with care and mutual respect.

From brand partnerships to internal culture, Natalie returned again and again to the idea that care should sit at the center of every conversation. She described strong partnerships as ones built on mutual respect and emphasized the importance of leaving RaceTrac better than she found it — for customers, families and employees alike.

At its core, that mindset reflects a broader leadership truth: how you lead day to day shapes the legacy you leave behind.

Persevere through self-doubt and keep moving forward.

Natalie spoke openly about the challenge of working in a family business and navigating the perceptions that come with it. That experience shaped her leadership style and reinforced the importance of earning trust through performance, not assumption. It also highlighted a larger truth: growth often requires pushing through doubt before confidence catches up.
